AFFAIRS OF CHINA,

CONFIDENTIAL.

[17548]

No. 1.

(May 22.)

SECTION 3.

The Marquis de Soveral to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received May 22.) Sir,

Portuguese Legation, London, May 20, 1908.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 18th instant, with reference to the reported landing of Chinese troops at Voncan, near Macao. I beg leave to tender you my best thanks for the information you were so good as to give me on this subject, and also for the suggestion that by a formal Agreement between the Portuguese and Chinese Governments on the subject of the prevention of the contraband trade in arms between Macao and the mainland the solution of the difficulty would be greatly facilitated. I must add that my Government have already made to the Viceroy of Canton proposals in the sense indicated by you, and I hope you will be good enough to instruct the British Representative at Peking to support our authorities in the pending negotiations.

I have, &c.
